General information
Caution!!! The housing situation becomes quite difficult during the months of the semester starting in autumn. Start looking early and read this page thoroughly to be informed in the best way possible.
In Germany, students must find their own accommodation. You are not automatically guaranteed accommodation by your place of study. The Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences does not have its own housing.
Generally, there is the possibility to rent a room in a student dormitory or to rent an apartment or room privately. Most apartments or shared rooms in Germany are not furnished. If rooms are rented furnished, they are usually somewhat more expensive.
A distinction is made between warm and cold rent. Additional costs must always be added to the cold rent. The rent including heating and utilities is called warm rent.
It is common for landlords to ask for one to three months’ rent as a deposit. It serves as security in case you leave any damage in the apartment. If you don’t damage anything, you will get the deposit back in full after you move out. Make sure you receive signed confirmation that you have paid the deposit and take videos and photos when you move in, so you can prove that existing damages to rooms or furniture were not caused by you.
The earlier, the better
It is best to look for a room or an apartment as early as possible. It is advisable to start looking before the semester begins. The closer you get to the semester, the more difficulties you will encounter when looking for an apartment. If you are staying abroad, it is best to look for accommodation before your arrival. Sometimes it can take a long time until you find a suitable living situation.
Do not limit your search to the immediate vicinity of Rhine-Waal University. If you also consider surrounding villages and cities, you increase your chances of finding accommodation immensely. Check the map to see which towns and cities are close and how long the transportation would take you to the campus and when the first and last connections leave. Important: You will receive a semester ticket with your registration, with which you can use public transportation throughout the state of NRW. The costs of transportation to the university are thus included in the semester fee and you will not have to pay extra.
Where can I live?
Student dormitories
The Studierendenwerk Düsseldorf maintains student dormitories in Kleve and in Kamp-Lintfort. There are different types of rooms in each dormitory. You can rent a single or a two-room apartment there, or a room in a two- or three-person shared apartment.
The dormitory places are allocated centrally by the Studierendenwerk Düsseldorf. The application is possible online.
The Studierendenwerk recommends that you apply for a room several months before you plan to move in. If necessary, have yourself placed on a waiting list. Waiting lists, currently, are up to one year.

If you use social media, such as “facebook”, you can get in touch with other students of Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences there. On social platforms on the internet, apartment ads, free WG rooms, interim rent offers and the like are always posted.

First nights
If you have not yet found an apartment when you start your studies, you should definitely clarify before your arrival where you will spend the first nights. It is possible, for example, to spend the night in a vacation apartment, a youth hostel or in a hotel. This will give you a place to stay first, and then you can continue your search for permanent local accommodation.
